Bowel cancer (colon) tests
M2-PK positive-negative
|
Quite frequently tumours or polyps do not bleed all the time but only intermittently. This test (M2-PK) does not rely on the presence of blood in the stool but on a product of the tumour cells, M2-pyruvate kinase. This test has proved to be more accurate than the FOB test and it will most likely take over as the best initial screening test for bowel cancer. After taking the stool sample, you return it to us by post and the result will
be ready for you within 2-3 days. There is no need to visit your doctor.
If you are looking for the most accurate non-invasive test then undoubtedly the M2-PK is the best. Studies have shown a significant improvement in detection of polyps and tumours over the FOB test. But you can order both the M2-PK and FOB tests as a package for optimum protection.
If you are interested in more invasive tests for bowel screening then you should ask your doctor about sigmoidoscopy (flexi-sig), colonoscopy or MRI scanning.

Bowel cancer (colon) tests
FOB - faecal occult blood test |
FOB test for bowel cancer and polyps
The FOB test is an effective screening test designed to detect tiny amounts of blood in the faeces
that may be due to a cancer or polyp in the colon. Early detection of cancers and polyps by this type of screening means they
are more easily treated. We recommend an FOB test that is specific for human blood and will not give a false result due to
red meat in the diet. This test is current 'state of the art' and available direct to you. The simple
test kit is posted to you on request. After taking the sample, you return it to us by post and the result will
be ready for you within 48 hours. There is no need to visit your doctor.
If you have any of the following conditions the test can be falsely positive and you should think carefully before
deciding whether to take the test; 'active' haemorrhoids (piles), inflammatory diseases of the colon including diverticulitis,
ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
Anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin can cause intestinal bleeding so if you wish to suspend your medication prior to taking the test you should check with your doctor.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (colitis)
|
Calprotectin test for IBS and colitis
If you have symptoms of IBS such as lower abdominal pain, chronic diarrhoea or bloating you should try this test. Calprotectin is a marker of inflammation that can be measured in faeces and is increased in colitis but is not increased in IBS. If the test is positive you are more likely to have colitis than IBS. If the test is negative you are more likely to have IBS than colitis. The test can also be used by colitis sufferers to monitor the activity of their condition. We send you a small sampler pot for you to return a small sample of stool to us for analysis and we email the result to you.
For these symptoms you should also consider these tests - discounts available for ordering more than one test
