Testing for bowel cancer
The British Medical Journal (BMJ) has just published this article that highlights the benefit of testing for blood in the stool to detect bowel cancer. The article demonstrates the value of tests similar to ours that use antibodies to specifically detect blood (immunochemical tests). The article states "immunochemical faeces tests showed good diagnostic performance for colorectal cancer . . high quality studies on their role in the diagnostic investigation of colorectal cancer in primary care are urgently needed." The sensitivity of the test was rated as high and the specificity of the test was rated as good.

We offer a medically-led health screening service for the public
with a difference. We bring important
new screening tests direct to your door
so you do not need to visit your doctor. Results are sent to your home and medical advice is standard. We remind you annually by email when screening tests are due to be repeated as the protection from disease by screening depends on regular testing. Oxford Screening specialises in home tests that you perform in your own home and either read the results of the test yourself or tests where you take the sample yourself then post it to us for processing. For tests returned to us we offer rapid testing and emailing of results generally within 24-48 hours of receiving samples. The home tests include tests for:
- irritable bowel syndrome and colitis - 'Calprotectin test' tells you your risk of having colitis (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease) or irritable bowel syndrome
- indigestion caused by infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria - this test tells you your risk of having Helicobacter and tells you if you need treatment; if you have had Helicobacter it can tell you if the treatment has been successful
- bowel cancer / bowel polyp test that detects small amounts of blood in the faeces and tells you your risk of having bowel cancer or polyps
- for more advice - See the "what tests are best for you" page to help you to decide which tests are most appropriate for you. For couples, see our bargain couples pack
No tests are 100% accurate but regular testing can reduce your risk of serious disease.
